Moab Canyonlands Half Marathon Event

My first successful event was on Friday in Moab. I had a great time cleaning up the road with Sara from Solutions - a non-profit that has a great moto - "Respect, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" activities and education (http://www.moab-solutions.org/). It was great to meet Sara and to give something back to Moab. I even put some skin in the game - managed to scrape my leg - not good for the run the next day. My own fault for being in shorts... On to the next ones!

New Groups on Facebook and LinkedIn

I created a group on LinkedIn and Facebook for Eventful! Volunteers. Facebook has support for events, so I went ahead and created an event for the Canyonlands half marathon Expo event on March 20th. I'm still working out the details, so as the nonprofits and projects get finalized, I'll update the event.

Moab Canyonlands Half Marathon Event

I'm currently talking to a couple of nonprofits in Moab, trying to come up with a good project for people to work on during the Expo on Friday, March 20. Once I have something concrete- hopefully next week, I need to get it to the runners. The race folks will hopefully post the info, or email out the info. Will look for runners to email me or sign up on my Facebook group event.

What have I done so far?

I have been testing this idea out on some endurance events. My first real test is going to be the Canyonlands Half Marathon on the March 20 Expo.

• September 2008 - Boulder Back Roads Marathon - Volunteered on the food line, surveyed participants, organized and supported a voter registration drive at the post race event
• October 2008 Denver Marathon - Volunteered at Expo, surveyed participants, talked to nonprofits and other race directors
• November 2008 Panicking Poultry - 5K - Surveyed participants, talked to nonprofits
• November 2008 Seattle Marathon - Worked with 3 nonprofits to come up with some projects to be done at the expo, but didn't get any going
• December 2008 ColderBoulder - Surveyed participants, had table at event, handed out information for holiday volunteering opportunities with Volunteer Connection
  

New Beginnings

I've been talking about starting a nonprofit for too long now. I haven't exactly done it yet, but I am taking baby steps. I've started this blog and got a basic website

I've been wrestling with the name of what I want to do for most of the time. Naming is hard. This is my favorite name so far. To explain what my ideas are, I created a movie on Xtranormal (http://www.xtranormal.com). It is a cool site that allows you to create a movie by just entering text, then embellishing it with your own style.
